From the time babies are born, we instinctively use music to calm and soothe our little ones. Lullabies, nursery rhymes, sing-song voices, rhythmic expressions of love… It’s no surprise that infants will recognize a song’s melody before they understand words!
Music is and has always been a prominent method of engaging, interacting and entertaining children of all ages. But did you know that music can positively enhance your child’s lifelong learning and growth in many other influential ways? Here’s how.
- Music helps improve brain power and memory retention.
- Music can accelerate brain growth and development, especially pertaining to language and reading skills.
- Practicing music helps build discipline, patience and perseverance.
- Music helps us build confidence in abilities, through practice and improvement.
- Playing instruments and dancing to music helps enhance fine motor skills.
- Music helps develop social skills: how to relate to people, how to work as a team, how to handle failure and achievement.
- Music enriches life through the continual exploration of creative expression.
How to Keep the Joy of Music Alive
To incorporate music in your little one’s daily repertoire, start with simple routines like singing a bedtime song or reciting nursery rhymes together each morning.
If your school-age children show an interest in music, consider enrolling them in lessons outside of the standard school setting. Even though many schools have reduced music programs due to cutbacks, extracurricular music lessons can be found right in your own hometown. Music lessons can offer amazing opportunities for your kids to form new friendships in a welcoming and creative environment while honing all the skills highlighted above.
At any age, playing music while cooking dinner, venturing out on a road trip (hello, carpool karaoke!), or relaxing around the house are all great ways to stay connected and inspired.
