Supporting Great Causes

You’ve decided you’d like to show your support for charitable events that are being held in your community, but how do you decide which cause is right for you?  With so many different charities and fundraisers needing our assistance, it can be hard to narrow down our choices.  Here are a few suggestions that may help you choose the right cause(s) for you:

  1. Go with your heart. It is important that you find value in the cause that you chose to support. If there is a specific cause that you are drawn to, or have a personal connection to, go with it.
  2. Do your research.  Educate yourself about how the proceeds of the fundraiser you want to participate in will be used.  If you are going to dedicate your time and energy, you want to make sure that all money raised will be used for the right purposes.
  3. Consider local.  At some point, we have all been affected by illness or tragedy, or know someone who has. Instead of supporting a specific cause, why not look for a local family or organization to support.

The Midland Y’s Men’s Club feels very strongly about supporting great local causes and strives each year to help as much as they can.  Over the years, great consideration has been put into which events need their help and will make the biggest difference.  Here are 2 causes that are supported by the Midland Y’s Men’s Club.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is an annual event founded in 2001 by Frank Baird to raise awareness to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. It was created in hopes of providing a way for everyone to start talking about a very sensitive and difficult topic.  The concept was simple; host an event to raise money, encourage everyone to talk, and have men slip on their red high heels to literally Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®.

What started off small has now grown to be a worldwide affair that benefits local rape crisis and domestic violence centres, as well as education, prevention and remediation programs. The success has been overwhelming.  To date, tens of thousands of men have walked and millions of dollars have been raised.

The Midland Y’s Men’s Music Festival was started by the club in 1945 and has been going strong ever since.  This event was created to support local kids as they showcase and embrace their musical talents.  Each year the Festival grows in size and children of all ages are encouraged to show off their skills with the chance to be awarded prizes.
